Henry A. Schiro Music Literacy Program

Children in our inner-city elementary schools have a desire to achieve, but they are surrounded by a lack of resources at school and at home. They deserve a chance to develop the skills and talents that they will need to become successful students, employees and citizens. Steinway Society the Bay Area is committed to offering a music education program to these students that teaches these skills and nurtures these talents.

We launched our music literacy program this past fall that teaches 4th and 5th graders in three inner-city schools in the San Jose Unified School District - Grant, Horace Mann Elementary and Lowell - to READ MUSIC. A dedicated group of volunteers and teachers deliver a custom curriculum that is designed to help students understand and read music while developing listening, learning and social interaction skills that can only be gained through a music education experience. We will expand our program into additional schools in the next academic year.
